Winter is here: Keep warm (and save money) this Winter

Worried about your heater burning a hole in your pocket this winter? Try these cost-cutting tips to warm up your home.

  1. Use your curtains effectively

Make the most of the heat from the sun by keeping your curtains open during the day and letting the sunlight in. When the sun starts to go down shut all your curtains and blinds, which act as another layer of insulation to keep warmth in your rooms.

  1. Keep everything closed & block out draughts

This can be easily forgotten but easy to do! Make sure you have no cracks or gaps in your windows or doors that will let the cold air in. If you’re heating a room, by shutting all the doors to the rest of your house you will be heating a smaller space and it will increase the efficiency. You can also place seals under doors for extra efficiency!

  1. Look at your insulation

When it comes to heat, around 25% is lost through the roof. This can be easily reduced by installing insulation. It’s also worth seeing what’s going on in your walls, as around a third of the heat in an uninsulated home is lost this way. Although it’s not as cheap to install, it could save you lots in your electricity bills for heating.

  1. Heater checks

Every heater is different and some will suck up your power!  It’s a good idea to get your heating appliances inspected by a licensed electrician. If one has a problem or isn’t running efficiently, they’ll be able to identify the problem and fix it – which could shave hundreds off your heating bill.

  1. Rug Up

Invest in snug blankets for the living room and get the whole family inside before shutting the doors and cranking the heat.
